Too Faced Cosmetics - Better Than False Lashes

When I was 14 years old, I had a really beautiful best friend, who was just a little bit evil too. Let's call her "Cher". She had the longest lashes I had ever seen! I had tried everything to get mine to look as long as hers; Baby powder under my mascara, Olive oil at night, layering, separating with a safety pin, nothing worked. Finally I asked her... "Cher, how can I get my lashes to look like yours, all long and fluttery"? She said, "you really wanna know"? "yes, I'll do it, just name it" I said. "Cut them" she said.. "cut them???" "Yup" she said "how short do I cut them?" "That depends, how long do you want them? The shorter you cut them the longer they'll grow" she told me. I raced home, ran to the mirror, and scissors in hand prepared to have super long, luxurious lashes, after all, I had cut them to the base, short as i could without bleeding. Long story short.....She got...

A moment for NYer's everywhere

This is a testament to all my friends and family back in NY & NJ that had to brave the storm that rocked them to their foundation, only to make them stronger. We are NYers, it takes a helluva lot more than terrorists and storms to break us! It's one of the things that I love about New Yorkers and what I've always been so proud of, is that after we've gone thru something together, it strengthens us, it makes us closer. I'll never forget the feeling of how connected I felt to my neighborhood, as a kid, after Hurricane Irene, we all emerged from our houses as if we were woken from a really long nap, and all gave each other a pat on the back as we acknowledged that yes, in fact, we had all gotten thru it unscathed. It was even greater when the Sept.11th attacks were over. I remember being so proud of my community for banding together and reaching out to each other. For once putting aside our differences like an old cup a'cawfee, and embracing our neighbors a...

Covergirl + Olay join forces

Anyone that reads my blog knows that I have no problem "playing favorites" but I am always willing to try something new, that's why I was excited when my BzzAgent assignment was COVERGIRL + OLAY Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation & Pressed Powder. As a kid I remember saving my allowance & buying my first bottle of foundation (accompanied with a grape roll-on lip gloss!) at probably age 10, it was Covergirl and it smelled vaguely similar to Noxema. Now that I'm all grown up, it's part of my job to use only the best foundations, so I was actually pleasantly surprised at how Covergirl has grown up as well. Gone is the smell of Noxema, and it's a lot creamier than I remember! Maybe it's the Olay influence but this foundation is pretty awesome, it glides on and dries to almost a powder finish, and actually stays pretty well all day. The pressed powder was nice, not as refined (or triple-milled)as I normally like but it's also not $55, this stuff retails ...

Sometimes Ya Just Gotta Testify

There's this photographer that's got me all riled up, and I just want to shout it from the rooftops...... Andrea Lucero of "Thru Andi's Lens" What can I say about Andi? The enthusiasm, the respect, and the admiration I have for her is beyond compare. I've watched Andi grow as a person and then find her voice as an artist. This is no ordinary photographer ! In the 22 years that I have been working with the best photographers in the industry, it's rare that I see one that can capture , I mean REALLY "capture" someones soul the way that Andi can. I'm reminded of one of my favorites, Paolo Roversi, by the way that I feel that I can look into a picture of one of Andi's subjects and feel the empathy, the compassion, the love that they are feeling. I don't know too many photographers that can do that. Many culture's believe that a photographs "steal your soul", In Andi's case I like to think that you are hiring he...

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to Customizing

Dear Readers, Recently, I decided to go with a new interface for my blog, in doing so I lost my "subscribe" button and subsequently my followers. I have since fixed the problem, so if you would be so kind as to divert your attention to the right hand column, and enter your email in the "Follow My Blog" box, we can continue with our previously scheduled program. LOL Thanks so much for your patience! Dyana

Annabella Sciorra & Gypsy Sparkle

One of the perks of doing hair and makeup for Hollywood Royalty, is the ability to bring people together who's paths might otherwise never have crossed.....  Such is the case with Annabella Sciorra (@ASciorra) and my sister's company, Gypsy Sparkle (@GypsySparkle).  As many of you know I am working with the mega-star on a new feature film called "The Maid's Room", where I am the Dept. Head of Makeup & Hair. Annabella was  picked as this years Mermaid Queen at the 30th Anniversary Mermaid Parade, in Coney Island ! As a Brooklyn native, I grew up loving this parade & everything Coney! For those of you that don't know about the parade, here's a little background.   click here for info about The Coney Island Mermaid Parade The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression. Too Faced Cosmetics Liquif-Eye

Hello Beauty Junkies ! Just stepped away from set for a moment to blog about my new favorite item from Too Faced Cosmetics. As you know I am doing  makeup and hair for a film called "A Maid's Room", starring the beautiful Paula Garces  I was fortunate enough to get a bunch of fantastic products from my good friends at Too Faced Cosmetics. So I'll be blogging about a product a day ( if I have enough time to escape the madness on set) and Paula and I have decided to also do "how to " videos to accompany the products so you'll get to see them in action and also learn helpful tips on how to use them! Today's product is : Liquif-Eye Eye Shadow Transformer Eyeliner   How many times have you wished that you could line your eyes with your favorite eye shadow color and make it stay put? If you're like me, you've tried dipping your fine line brush in water and swirling it around in a cool metallic purple shadow only to find that it's jus...

Celebrity Red Carpet Makeup & Hair Whitney Cummings

I recently had the pleasure of doing makeup & hair on another one of my favorite funny ladies, Whitney Cummings. If I didn't know better, I'd say I'm starting to become the female comics makeup artist. First Sarah Silverman, then Margaret Cho, Parker Posey and now Whitney Cummings? You may remember Whitney from Chelsea Lately's roundtable, or "roasts" of Joan Rivers, David Hasselhoff, and Donald Trump. Her next project is an NBC sitcom called appropriately "Whitney". I met Whitney at her hotel, her face scrubbed clean, and could not get over how flawless her skin was! She is absolutely gorgeous, the Angelina Jolie of comedy. She has the most beautiful alabaster skin, unlike most LA women she isn't sprayed orange or tanned, so I wanted to let her true complexion shine through. Since her skin was already moisturized, I started with KohGenDo's Makeup Color Base in green, just to tone down any redness Then I used Aqua Foundation in PK...

Featured Blog

My blog was featured on one of my Top favorite makeup sites ! I consider it quite an honor because I am absolutely in LOVE LOVE LOVVVVVE with their products. Honestly, to hear me talk about them on set, you would think they are paying me to (ummm, ps. they're not, but what a great idea!).There is not a foundation that I have ever used that makes for a more flawless, natural look.I like to say "it's as if tiny lightbulbs are under your skin" and I haven't met one person that disagrees with me after seeing themselves. Whether it be a model or celebrity or a bride, if I want the perfect dewey finish the only products that even come to mind are the Moisture Foundation and The Natural Lighting Powder.....and here I go again, singing their praises, I can't help myself, and it's contagious.Oliva Palermo tied with Madonna for " Most Commanding red carpet look and loved how I did her makeup, Parker Posey loved it so much she carried it in her handbag on set...

It Makes A MommaBird Proud

I can honestly say, that some of the most memorable moments of my makeup career, were not on set meeting my favorite celebrities, but instead meeting a group of students that would forever change my life. I was asked to teach at one of the most prestigious makeup schools. I jumped at the opportunity ! What I encountered, was part legend, part insane assylum, and all worth every minute! I have to admit, my first day I was nervous as hell! Who did I think I was ? I was a working artist, I had taught before, but never in such a formal setting. I was thrown to the lions without a curriculum. How was I going to be the teacher that they needed, that they expected? All I could think about was the sign on my bulletin board that I had cut out of a magazine... I could only hope that I didn't let them down. As the weeks went on, I realized that I had found a new love! My passion for makeup could finally be transferred. I could talk about Makeup all day, and nobody rolled their eyes and ...
